He challenges Donald Trump. Emmanuel Macron stated on Friday, May 30, that the decision to sanction Russia if it refuses a ceasefire in Ukraine was a "credibility test" for the United States. "I spoke 48 hours ago with President Trump, who expressed his impatience. The question now is: what do we do about it? We are ready," and if Moscow "confirms" that it is not "ready to make peace," Washington will also have to confirm its "commitment" to sanction Russia, the French head of state told the press during a visit to Singapore.

"I don't think the post-Kiev situation is a credibility issue for Europeans," he said earlier, referring to a meeting of Ukraine's European allies on May 10, where they affirmed their support for a 30-day ceasefire proposal from the United States, which Russia has not responded to despite the threat of sanctions. " I think it's a credibility test for the Americans," continued Emmanuel Macron, who was speaking alongside Singaporean Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.

"Europeans are credible, they are consistent and they are reliable (...) We have not changed, we still believe in the international order, in cooperation, in open trade and in respecting the rules," he also declared. Emmanuel Macron is due to deliver the opening speech on Friday evening at the Shangri-La Dialogue, the largest forum on security and defense in Asia, which Volodymyr Zelensky participated in last year.
